Here we are once again. It’s time for the voice of the American people to be heard. There are millions of words that have been spoken and written about the issues and the controversies and the very serious stakes in this election. A lot of Very Smart People have Very Important Things to say to you about this. I am not one of them.
All I’m going to say to you is this: one side (it’s easy to tell which one because in our politics there are always only two sides) is actively engaged in the end stages of a four decade long project to install a fascist, authoritarian system of government, ruled by and for the benefit of the wealthy, white caste that has forever ruled America. Don’t vote for them.
The other thing I want to say to you is, while you’re watching the results come in tomorrow, do the best you can to stay hopeful. And to help you do that, here’s a recipe for a very strong, but very good drink.
The Mid-term Manhattan
Ingredients:
Rye whisky (Templeton 6 Year is ideal, but Bulleit will also do nicely)
Dry vermouth (Dolin. Always Dolin)
Luxardo or Amarena cherries
Angostura bitters
Maple syrup (the good kind, not that Pearl Milling stuff your mom buys)
A rocks glass
Drop two cherries in the rocks glass, cover them with several dashes of the bitters. Muddle (mash) them lightly and set aside for now.
In a tall glass filled with ice cubes, pour 2 1/2 ounces of rye, 1/2 ounce of vermouth and a teaspoon of maple syrup. Stir that up until its nicely chilled.
Drop some fresh ice cubes in the rocks glass and strain in the whisky mixture from the tall glass. Give everything one last, quick stir to meld all the flavors together and garnish with a fresh orange peel that you’ve squeezed over the glass to release its oils and then rubbed along the rim of the glass.
Find a nice comfortable spot on your couch and sip this wonderful concoction while you watch Steve Kornacki lose his goddamned mind tomorrow night. Cheers.
